Boards & Committees for 2008
Listed below are the committees for St. John's United Church of Christ. Most committees meet monthly, with some meeting bimonthly or occasionally as needed. Except for the Church Board, all committees are open to anyone.

Church Board (by nomination only): Oversees the overall business of running our church. Members of the church board must: be nominated by the Nominating Committee, be voted in (by the congregation), belong to one or more committees, and serve a three-year term. Meets every 3rd Monday of the month at 7 PM. Click here for the Church Board Newsletter.
Nominating Committee: Selects nominees for Church Board. Meets once a year in early November.
Women's Guild: The Women of St. John meet every 2ndThursday of the month (no July/Aug meetings). The Women's Guild promotes spiritual growth, life issues, stewardship and service, as well as program building, work projects, funeral dinners and some church dinners. ------ACTIVE COMMITTEES -------
Capital Improvement Committee: Explores long-range goals for church property projects, examines their feasibility and presents  proposals for their adoption. Meets as needed.
Caregivers Committee: Visits homebound shut-ins, nursing home shut-ins, and hospitalized members. Meets every other 1st Thursday at 6:30 PM.
Christian Education (Board of): Plans & provides for a comprehensive Sunday School education for children, youth and adults, and their activities, as well as overseeing the Children's Christmas Pageant. Meets 2nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM.
Evangelism & Membership Committee: Maintains current list of membership, attracts and welcomes visitors and guests, follows up on inactive members. Responsible for Fellowship Time, Welcomers, special event letters, church directory and brochures. Meets 1st Monday of every month.
Finance Committee: Monitors the financial resources of the church and oversees the yearly budgeting process, as well as the annual Commitment Campaign. Prepares Church Board Annual Budget for all funds. Meets as needed.
House Committee: Maintains and develops church property, including repairs and remodeling. Meets as needed.
Memorial Committee: Records & recommends use of all memorial gifts to the church. Responsible for acknowledgements of such gifts, as well as keeping a list of possible Memorial gifts so that interested donors might have suggestions. Meets as needed.
Music & Worship Committee: With Rev. Kate and Becky Brockman, evaluates and plans worship services and musical ministry of the church. Also includes Subcommittees: Decorations/Flowers, Paraments (Altar Cloths), Communion Preparations, Sound Technicians, and contact persons for weekly Offering Ushers, Liturgists, Greeters (handing out bulletins) and Nursery Attendants. Meets every 3rd Thursday of month at 6 PM.
Outreach Committee: Plans & oversees the mission of the church in the community & beyond. Meets as needed.
Pastoral Relations Committee: Assists the pastors of the church. Meets as needed.
Personnel Committee: Oversees matters pertaining to staffing, job descriptions, salaries, raises, and contracts. Meets as needed.
Recreation Committee: Plans & oversees the organized athletic activities of the church as well as special events such as the annual Church Picnic. Meets as needed.
Special Events Committee: Responsible for hosting the Faith Commitment Dinner and the Winter Wing Ding (or Spring Fling), as well as any special retirement, anniversary or celebratory dinners.
Stewardship Committee: Recommends to Church Board benevolent allocations, procedures, and stewardship education. Responsible for Faith Commitment Campaign and Time/Talent service possibilities. Meets every other 1st Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM.
Technology Committee: Responsible for the technology needs of the church (computers, sound equipment & media) and the St. John's UCC website. Meets as needed.
Ushers Committee: Responsible for assisting acolytes, assisting guests and visitors during Sunday morning services, attendance count and sheets, prayer requests, seating. Meets as needed.
------- TEMPORARY COMMITTEES -------
Committee Review Task Force: Will evaluate all St. John's church committees with the purpose of realignment, revising each committee's purpose and direction, and setting membership numbers & term limits  -- with an implementation goal of January 2009. Will consist of members from committees, Church Board and "at large" from the congregation. Meets on 2nd Thursday of the month at 6 PM.
Vision Implementation Committee: Will look at the Visioning Committee recommendations for St. John's and find specific ways of implementing them for growth, using public relations, marketing, speakers, and IN/KY Conference resources to educate the congregation/community about the uniqueness of the UCC and St. John's.
Associate Pastor Search Committee: Will work with Rev. Kate, the IN/KY Conference and the Congregation to interview candidates for a full-time, salaried Associate Pastor at St. John's.
------ CURRENTLY INACTIVE COMMITTEES -------
Historical Committee: Preserves & maintains any historical documents related to the church.
